Noida: BJP leader Sangeet Som has triggered controversy by saying the Taj Mahal is a “blot” on Indian culture and misquoted history by saying that Shah Jahan, builder of the 17th century marble mausoleum, had jailed his father and wanted to wipe out Hindus from the country.

The remarks by the Sardhana MLA in Meerut came after the Uttar Pradesh government removed the Taj Mahal from the list of attractions in its tourism booklet.

“Many people were disappointed that the Taj Mahal was removed from the UP tourism booklet. What history are we talking about? Whose history?

“The creator of the Taj Mahal (Shah Jahan) imprisoned his father. He wanted to wipe out all Hindus from India. If these people are part of our history, then it is very unfortunate.

“I guarantee you that we will change this history,” Som was shown saying in an undated viral video, apparently addressing a public gathering.

TV reports said the BJP leader was addressing a gathering in Meerut.

Som wrongly quoted history saying Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan had jailed his father. It was Shah Jahan’s son Aurangzeb who had dethroned and jailed his father inside the Agra Fort.

The Taj, one of the Seven Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage site, was built by Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal.

New Delhi: Dismissing allegations of vendetta in ordering a case against his predecessor Oommen Chandy, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday rejected the demand for making public the report of the Justice G. Sivarajan Commission in the solar scam issue saying it will be tabled in the state Assembly at the appropriate time.

“Now, we will submit the Commission report along with the action taken report in the Assembly the next time it meets. It has to be tabled within six months. If we do anything else, that will be illegal. We haven’t taken any partisan decision in this subject. According to law, what a government has to do, we have done only that. The timing (of tabling the report) hasn’t been decided,” Vijayan told IANS.

Rejecting the charge of vendetta as has been alleged by the Congress, Vijayan said the Sivarajan Commission was set up under the Commissions of Inquiry Act by the government under Chandy. “This government didn’t appoint the commission, the previous UDF government had set it up. We had to agitate a lot (when in opposition) to set up the commission,” he said.

The chief minister said there was evidence before the Commission and it submitted the report. According to the Commissions of Inquiry Act, the government can take two decisions on the commission report. “First, submit the whole report to the Assembly or we can take action on the report and submit the action taken report to the Assembly.”

“Since it was a very controversial case and it was a four-volume report, we sought legal opinion from the Advocate General and Director General of Prosecution, and according to their advice, we took actions. Now, we will submit the commission report along with the action taken report in the Assembly the next time it meets. It has to be tabled within six months,” he said.

The solar scam made headlines over four years ago with the arrest of Saritha Nair and her partner Biju Radhakrishnan, who had allegedly conned businessmen by floating their high-level connections including with Chandy, who was then the chief minister.

The probe decision was announced by Vijayan after the weekly cabinet meeting last week, based on the recommendations of the Solar Scam Commission report submitted by Justice (retd) G. Sivarajan in September.

A Special Investigation Team led by Director General of Police Rajesh Diwan has been set up to investigate the cases.

Bengaluru: Deposed AIADMK leader V K Sasikala, serving a four-year term in a corruption case, on Thursday returned to the central prison at the end of a five-day emergency parole for visiting her ailing husband at a Chennai hospital.

Parappana Agrahara central jail superintendent P S Ramesh said Sasikala returned to the prison at 5 pm. Her 74-year-old husband M Natarajan had undergone liver and kidney transplants at a corporate hospital in Chennai.

Sasikala left Chennai Thursday morning by a car which had to halt at several locations till it reached the Bengaluru highway as party cadres gathered to greet her. She had sought a 15-day parole, but was granted only five days with tough conditions, including that she would not involve in political or any other public activity or take part in party activities.

During the emergency parole, the 60-year-old leader was allowed only to visit the hospital where her husband was undergoing treatment and stay at the residence as mentioned in the parole application. It was also stipulated by the prison authorities that she should not entertain any visitors either at her residence or the hospital and that she should not interact with any media — print or electronic.

Sasikala has been lodged in the Parapana Agrahara central jail since February this year after the Supreme Court upheld her conviction by a special court in a disproportionate assets case. Her relatives Ilavarasi and V N Sudhakaran are also serving four-year jail terms in the case.

Sasikala’s appointment as interim general secretary of AIADMK after the death J Jayalalithaa in December last year was declared as invalid last month by the party’s general council meeting held after the merger of factions led by chief minister K Palaniswami and his present deputy O Panneerselvam.

Her visit to Chennai came at a time when her nephew and sidelined AIADMK leader T T V Dhinakaran and the ruling camp are fighting it out to get the two leaves symbol, which was frozen by the Election Commission.

Houston: The spine-chilling mystery involving a 37-year-old man from Kerala has taken a new turn in Dallas after the FBI has reportedly searched the home of the 3-year-old girl who has been missing since Saturday after her foster father reportedly sent her outside around 3am as punishment for not drinking milk.

Sherin Mathews, who has developmental issues and limited verbal communication skills, was last seen outside her family’s backyard in Richardson, Dallas, at 3.15am.

Richardson police along with an FBI evidence recovery team entered the house of Wesley Mathews, reportedly a Kochi native, on Tuesday night to execute a search warrant, police Sergeant Kevin Perlich said.

The search was part of the “natural progression” of the investigation, he was quoted as saying by the Dallas Morning News.

Police went door-to-door in the neighborhood and used search dogs and helicopters to look for Sherin.

Sherin’s foster father Mathews reportedly told the police that he put her outside and asked her to stand next to a large tree about 3am on Saturday after she refused to drink milk, an arrest-warrant affidavit said.

The tree was behind a fence, about 100 feet south of the family’s home, and across an alley. Mathews admitted to police that he knew coyotes had been seen in the alley, the affidavit said adding that he checked on Sherin about 3.15 am and realized she was gone.

After looking around for her, he said he then went inside ‘to do laundry’ and decided ‘to wait until morning to continue searching or for her to return on her own’, Perlich said.

Police were not alerted to her disappearance until about five hours later.

“Why was the last sighting at 3 o’clock and the parents not call us until after 8 am, that’s the question we want answered as well,” Perlich told KXAS-TV NBC5.”

As far as why she was out there, how long she was out there, that’s the questions we have for the parents.

“The girl’s mother does not face any charges. She was in the house at the time, but was reportedly asleep and unaware of what Wesley Mathews was doing, Perlich said.

Sherin’s parents are no longer speaking with police and have since retained legal counsel, he said.

“I don’t know what happened,” said Philip Mathew, Sherin Mathews’s great-uncle.

Investigators will process what they have collected, including security footage, electronics and items in the family’s three vehicles that were towed from the home, Perlich said.

Mathews was arrested on Saturday on the charge of abandoning or endangering a child. He was released from custody on Sunday after posting $2,50,000 bond.

He is required to wear an electronic monitoring device and surrender his passport as part of the conditions of his bond, the paper said.

Meanwhile, officials with Texas Child Protective Services (CPS) removed the toddler’s 4-year-old sister from the family on Monday and placed her in protective custody as police continue to search for the missing child.

The CPS would only say they have had “contact” with the Mathews family before, but “details are confidential,” NBC Dallas reported.

The Mathews’ reportedly adopted the girl two years ago from an orphanage in India. She was malnourished and physically underdeveloped and does not have the same language skills a typical 3-year-old would in the US, Perlich said.

He told NBC5 it was not unusual for her to be awake late at night to eat to increase her weight.

Agartala: Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) leader Prakash Karat has asserted that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) wants to use central power to establish influence in Kerala, but as they are unable to do so, they are raising issues of violence and murders.

“All 45 years RSS has been trying to establish its influence in Kerala by targeting the CPM. They are now in power and they want to utilize the central power, but they are not able to do so. They are raising the issues of violence and killing,” Karat told ANI.

Earlier on Wednesday, a 36-year-old RSS activist was injured in an attack, while bombs were hurled at a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office in separate incidents in Kerala’s Kannur.

Activist K.M. Suresh, an auto driver, was attacked by some unidentified persons at Thalassery on Tuesday evening and is in a critical condition.

A case has been registered against unknown assailants and police said they suspect it to be fallout of political rivalry.

Police had recovered some swords, knives and iron rods near the BJP district committee office on Tuesday.

In another incident, bombs were hurled at the BJP party office at Patyam around 12.30 a.m. on Wednesday but no one was injured and only some furniture was damaged.

A case had been registered by the police following a complaint by BJP area committee president K. Ajeesh.

The BJP had launched its ‘Jana Raksha Yatra’ on October 3 from Kannur to highlight the Left’s atrocities in the state.

BJP president Amit Shah had slammed Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, alleging that maximum killings of BJP and RSS workers had taken place in the latter’s home district of Kannur.

New Delhi: A dream came true for 22-year-old Rudrali Patil, when she got a call from the British High Commission to serve as its commissioner to India.

Even though it was just for a day, Ms Rudrali, in a crisp black suit, donned the cap of the diplomat efficiently, as she addressed the media today, talking about empowering girl children in rural India.

The law student, who assumed charge on October 9, was chosen for the once in a lifetime opportunity after emerging victorious in a video making competition on girls’ rights conducted by the British High Commission.

As the British High Commissioner, she chaired a meeting with department directors in the High Commission to become acquainted with its operations.

She was mentored by the High Commissioner Dominic Asquith.

“The High Commissioner was a paternal figure to me. When I was following him throughout the day, every time he met anybody in the elevator or on the stair case he would follow up with the instruction he had given them. It is a really difficult task,” she said.

Ms Rudrali admitted to have been stressed the night before she was to take charge, and said she had spent hours to prepare her opening speech as the British High Commissioner.

She worked on her body language and facial expressions. “I kept thinking that everyone would be very serious here,” she said.

But as the day drew to a close, Ms Rudrali said she enjoyed every bit of what she had expected to be a “stressful job”.

“The deputy commissioner kept telling me how to take short notes before giving any speech. It was a warm and a very insightful experience,” she said.

A student at the Amity Law School in Noida, Ms Rudrali has been closely working with a group of volunteers to educate girls and women about their legal and property rights, through NGO – Sai Foundation.

The Maharashtra-based organisation focuses on health and education of the girl child while attempting to break gender- based stereotypes.

“We try to create awareness about menstruation that is still a taboo in rural India, through workshops that we organise in different villages,” she said.

Ms Rudrali also joined the British Deputy High Commissioner Alexander Evans for a programme, “Chat with a diplomat” organised at the Indraprastha College.

“I always used to think that diplomats meet their counterparts and do some deals between two nations and are restricted to their cubicles but that is not the case.

“After I went to college with the commissioner, I realised how important it is for a diplomat to interact directly with the people. I missed this part of their life in books that I read,” she said.

Kolkata: Suspended Trinamool Congress leader Mukul Roy on Wednesday resigned his Rajya Sabha seat citing “lack of principle” as his compulsion to leave the party of which he was a founding member while the Trinamool accused him of insulting its supremo Mamata Banerjee.

“A party should have certain principles. Sometimes Trinamool Congress is with the BJP, sometimes they are with the Congress. They sometimes term the BJP as communal, sometimes say they are not communal,” Roy told the media at his residence in the capital.

Roy also said the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool was “very much a part of the NDA government once” and joined hands with the BJP and now the party thinks that the country cannot go ahead without the Congress.

Section 375 of the Indian Panel Code made an exception on the question of sex with minor wife by the husband in child marriage cases.

A bench of Justice Madan B Lokur and Justice Deepak Gupta — in separate but concurring judgements — said the exception was “arbitrary, discriminatory and capricious”.

Justice Lokur said the exception has no rational nexus with the objective sought to be achieved by the different statutes
