Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa has resigned after a long speech in the assembly on the day of the Supreme Court-ordered floor test. The election results came out on May 15.

The assembly proceedings for the Karnataka floor test had been adjourned till 3:30 pm for lunch.

Two Congress legislators had gone missing, following which the police had gone to a hotel in Bengaluru to look for them.

The Congress and the Janata Dal Secular or JDS have alleged that the BJP had been trying to poach their MLAs in order to win the floor test.

Two days ago, Yeddyurappa of the BJP took oath to lead a minority government in Karnataka. He was given 15 days by Karnataka governor Vajubhai Vala to prove his majority.

The Supreme Court on Friday, however, ordered the trust vote to be held today after hearing a petition filed by the Congress. Though the BJP won 104 seats, it is eight short of the majority mark of 111 after one of its legislators was picked as the speaker for today. The Congress and the Janata Dal Secular (JDS) of HD Deve Gowda have taken their legislators out of Karnataka to prevent them from being poached by the BJP.

The Supreme Court also rejected the Congress’s petition against making Bopaiah the pro term speaker.

“Live broadcast of floor test would be the best way to ensure transparency of proceedings,” the court said.

Pathanapuram: The families of four Keralites, who are facing capital punishment in Malaysia on drug-related charges, have received information that King Muhammad V has suspended the verdict and ordered a fresh probe.

Ranith from Pathanapuram in Kollam, Sadanandan from Chittar in Pathanamthitta, Aby Alex from Chathanthara and Sumesh Sudhakaran from Varkala had been sentenced to death under Malaysia’s strict laws designed to prevent drug trafficking.

The four cleaning staff were arrested in 2013 during their duty hours, as narcotics were found at the office of the Mercury Plastic Company where they work, besides in their residence.

The Malaysian Supreme Court sentenced them on January 17 this year. Their families had petitioned legislators and state and central governments seeking intervention, but such attempts proved futile.

Finally the Gandhi Bhavan at Pathanapuram took up the case with the Satyasai Seva Sangham in Malaysia, whose leaders initiated legal proceedings to save the lives of the accused.

The four Keralites had arrived in Malaysia on May 3, 2013. The company used to transport them from their accommodation to the factory and back.

On July 26, 2013, a police raid at their accommodation yielded narcotics from a Malaysian of Tamil descent, Nagarajan.

Narcotics were also seized from their office.

Malaysian A Sargunan, 42, and Keralites Sumesh Sudhakaran, Alex Aby Jacob Alexander, Renjith Raveendran and Sajith Sadanandan had faced two charges under Section 39B (1)(a) Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

They were found guilty of trafficking 4,252.7 grams of methamphetamine on July 26, 2013 in a house in Sungai Lalang, Semenyih.

The five men were also found guilty of trafficking 1,506.9 grams of ketamine on the same day and at the same time.

The five Indian nationals had been employed as cleaners and Sargunan, who was a taxi driver, was engaged on a part-time basis to transport them from their accommodation to their workplace daily.

In their defence, Sargunan said his duty was just to transport the workers and the four Indians said they were merely cleaners who worked on two three-hour shifts at the premises.

In delivering the sentence, Justice Datuk Ghazali Cha said the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt, that the men were aware the premises were used to process drugs.

Other incriminating circumstantial evidence was the discovery of Sargunan’s shirt and towel as well as some of the accused’s toothbrushes in the premises, which indicated that they had spent long hours there.

Initially, there were seven arrests but two of them – Malaysian R Nagarajan and Indian national Shajahan Thasthagir – were acquitted at the early stages of the trial which started on March 1, 2016.

Datuk N Sivananthan and Low Huey Theng defended Sargunan while Jayarubbiny Jayaraj defended the other four men. DPP Deepa Nair Thevaharan prosecuted.

In the meanwhile, the fresh probe that the King has ordered will prove to be crucial to the accused, though the verdict has been stayed.

The panel appointed by the King will gather evidence and record statements from them. The court will reach a final verdict after examining these also.

The inquiry will be swift as dictated by Malaysian law.

The families of the accused are worried that the accused do not know the Malaysian language. They also point out that the company trapped their youth with a false promise of help.

Some of the relatives are planning to fly to Malaysia for coordinating legal procedures.

Barcelona: FC Barcelona’s talismanic forward Lionel Messi rated Real Madrid as an outfit that has the best footballers and can win games like no other.

“Position by position, Madrid have the best players in the world,” Messi told TyC Sports.

“(Barca) do as well, but Madrid have something that only they have. When they play badly, they still get results. We have to be the far superior side to win,” he added.

He said no other team in the world can win games when they are playing poorly like Real Madrid can.

Real qualified for a third consecutive Champions League final earlier this month seeing off strong sides like Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and Bayern Munich.

Barcelona exited in the quarterfinals, losing 3-0 away to Roma and losing on away goals.

“The Champions League (loss was a mistake). Given the (4-1) advantage we had before the second leg, we (should have reached) the semi-final. It was a huge disappointment.

(But) it motivates me to see Madrid in the Champions League final again; to see them winning leagues. I want to win the Champions League every year. I want to be a league champion every year — it’s what we all want.”

Messi helped Barcelona complete a domestic double this season, their third in four years.

Often linked to other clubs like Manchester City, where he could link up with former coach Pep Guardiola and Sergio Aguero, Messi ruled out any move out of the Catalan club..

“I am not tempted to leave Barcelona. I won’t find anywhere better than this for me. It’s the best team in the world. Every year, I am fighting to win everything. I know that every year I will have personal challenges. I don’t need to go anywhere to prove anything.

“It’s true that you think about other leagues, you see the English league … but when it comes to making a decision, it would be really difficult to leave Barcelona. It’s the best city in the world, my kids are happy and have all their friends here. There’s no need for a change. Barca and Argentina are my two loves.”

Washington: India is among the hotspots where overuse of water resources has caused a serious decline in the availability of freshwater, according to a first-of-its-kind study using an array of NASA satellite observations of Earth.

Scientists led by NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in the US used data on human activities to map locations where freshwater is changing around the globe and why.

The study, published in the journal Nature, found that Earth’s wet land areas are getting wetter and dry areas are getting drier due to a variety of factors, including human water management, climate change and natural cycles.

Areas in northern and eastern India, the Middle East, California and Australia are among the hotspots where overuse of water resources has caused a serious decline in the availability of freshwater that is already causing problems, ‘The Guardian’ reported.

In northern India, groundwater extraction for irrigation of crops such as wheat and rice have caused a rapid decline in available water, despite rainfall being normal throughout the period studied, the report said.

“The fact that extractions already exceed recharge during normal precipitation does not bode well for the availability of groundwater during future droughts,” researchers said.

The team used 14 years of observations from the US/German-led Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) spacecraft mission to track global trends in freshwater in 34 regions around the world.

“This is the first time that we have used observations from multiple satellites in a thorough assessment of how freshwater availability is changing everywhere on Earth,” said Matt Rodell of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.

On land, freshwater is one of the most essential of Earth’s resources, for drinking water and agriculture. While some regions’ water supplies are relatively stable, others experienced increases or decreases.

“What we are witnessing is major hydrologic change,” said Jay Famiglietti of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).

“We see a distinctive pattern of the wet land areas of the world getting wetter – those are the high latitudes and the tropics – and the dry areas in between getting dryer. Embedded within the dry areas we see multiple hotspots resulting from groundwater depletion,” said Famiglietti.

He noted that while water loss in some regions, like the melting ice sheets and alpine glaciers, is clearly driven by warming climate, it will require more time and data to determine the driving forces behind other patterns of freshwater change.

]]>
New Delhi/Thiruvananthapuram: In line with the price hike announced earlier, the cost of petrol and diesel across India has been hiked by 32 paise and 24 paise, respectively. The petrol price touched Rs 80.01 per litre on Saturday in Thiruvananthapuram, while diesel price has gone up to Rs 73.06.

Fuel prices, which were not revised apparently on account of the Karnataka polls, are now being revised on a daily basis as is the practice. It is estimated that public sector oil marketing companies suffered a loss of about Rs 500 crore as the prices were left unchanged for 19 days since April 25.

As per the Indian Oil Corporation website, prices of non-branded petrol have been revised to Rs 75.61 per litre in Delhi, Rs 76.83 per litre in Bengaluru, Rs 78.29 per litre in Kolkata, Rs 83.45 per litre in Mumbai and Rs 78.46 per litre in Chennai.

Diesel prices across India have been revised to Rs 67.08 per litre in Delhi, Rs 68.23 per litre in Bengaluru, Rs 69.63 per litre in Kolkata, Rs 71.42 per litre in Mumbai, Rs 70.80 per litre in Chennai.

As per reports, the hike in prices comes in the backdrop of increase in global crude oil prices, which are reportedly estimated to touch $100 for one barrel.

In April, Union petroleum minister Dharmendra Pradhan said the Centre and the state governments have been considering bringing the petroleum products under the ambit of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

Meanwhile, brokerage firms said that around Rs 4 per litre increase in petrol and diesel prices is in the offing if state-owned fuel retailers are to return to margin levels that existed prior to the Karnataka poll.

No sooner had Karnataka polled to elect a new state government, state-owned Indian Oil Corp (IOC), Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd (HPCL) and Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd (BPCL) ended a 19-day hiatus in revising petrol and diesel prices and reverted to the practices of changing rates on a daily basis.

“Our computation suggests that downstream oil marketing companies (OMCs) are required to increase retail prices of diesel by a steep Rs 3.5-4 a litre and gasoline (petrol) by Rs 4-4.55 per litre in the coming weeks to earn normative gross marketing margins of Rs 2.7/litre,” Kotak Institutional Equities said in a report.

The increase is based on assumption that global price of diesel and petrol and Rupee-US Dollar exchange rate remain stable hereon.

“We note that the lack of price hikes over the past three weeks, before Karnataka elections amid a sharp increase in global crude/product prices, has resulted in sharp moderation in gross marketing margins to around Rs 0.5-0.7 a liter,” it said.

Last week, ICICI Securities had said that auto fuel net marketing margins were weak at Rs 0.31 a litre as prices were not hiked after April 24.

OMCs returned to daily price revision from May 14.

They are estimated to have lost about Rs 500 crore on absorbing higher cost resulting from the spike in international oil rates and fall in rupee against the US dollar.

The benchmark international rate for petrol, used for revising rate on April 24, had gone up from $78.84 per barrel to $82.98 on May 14. It has further risen to $83.30, indicating more daily hikes would be needed to level retail price with cost.

Similarly, benchmark international diesel rates during this period have climbed from $84.68 per barrel to $88.93.

Also, the rupee has weakened to Rs 67.06 per US dollar from Rs 66.62, making imports costlier.
