Melbourne/Kochi: As massive rescue mission is progressing to bring back injured Indian Navy Commander Abhilash Tomy, the Navy’s P8I (Poseidon Eight India) aircraft has reached the location of the sailor, Manorama News reported on Sunday.

According to the report, Tomy is responding to radio communications. The area is witnessing heavy rain and wind which is is reportedly at 55 kmph.

The rescue team, which landed in Mauritius on Sunday, has essential medicines and food for the sailor.

Cdr Tomy sustained severe injury after his yacht was hit by a vicious storm mid-way across the southern Indian Ocean while taking part in the Golden Globe Race. He is in touch with race organisers in France through messages, Defence spokesman D K Sharma said on Saturday.

Cdr Tomy is in communication with the Race Control at France through messages. Race control is relaying messages to JRCC (Joint Rescue Coordination Centre) Australia. He has requested for a stretcher as he is not able to move on his own,” the defence spokesman quoted the Australian Joint Rescue Control Centre (JRCC) as saying in a release.

Tomy, representing India in the Golden Globe Race 2018 (GGR) on an indigenously built sailing vessel ‘S V Thuriya’, suffered a back injury on Friday after his yacht was dismasted in the severe storm that raised 14-metre-high waves.

Another race contestant ‘S V Hanley Energy Endurance’ was also heading towards ‘S V Thuriya’ though it had suffered damage of its own in Friday night’s inclement weather.

An Australian fisheries vessel ‘Osiris’ is also heading towards location.

‘Osiris’ has a medical officer and one bed infirmary on-board, it said.

A Royal Australian Navy Ship is likely to depart for the stricken vessel’s location and is estimated to arrive after four to five days.

The Indian Navy had earlier said all efforts were being made to rescue the officer.

“All-out efforts are being made to rescue Abhilash Tomy. Indian Naval stealth Frigate ‘INS Satpura’ operating in the Indian Ocean has been dispatched for the rescue mission,” a defence spokesman said in Kochi.

Tomy’s vessel is in the south Indian Ocean, approximately 3,518 km from Perth in Australia and the Australian Rescue Coordination Centre at Canberra is coordinating the rescue mission in conjunction with many agencies, including the Australian defence department and the Indian Navy, he said, quoting information received from the organisers.

Tomy’s vessel was dismasted in extremely rough weather and sea conditions, with wind speeds of 130 kmh. He was in third position in the race and has sailed over 10,500 nautical miles (19,446 km) in the last 84 days, since commencement of the race on July 1.

London: Anna Burns, Esi Edugyan, Daisy Johnson, Rachel Kushner, Richard Powers and Robin Robertson were announced on Thursday as the six authors shortlisted for the 2018 Man Booker Prize for Fiction.

The announcement was made by Chair of judges, Kwame Anthony Appiah, at a press conference at the offices of Man Group, the much coveted prize’s sponsor.

He remarked that each of these novels is “a miracle of stylistic invention” in which the language takes centre stage.

“All of our six finalists are miracles of stylistic invention. In each of them the language takes centre stage. And yet in every other respect they are remarkably diverse, exploring a multitude of subjects ranging across space and time. From Ireland to California, in Barbados and the Arctic, they inhabit worlds that not everyone will have been to, but which we can all be enriched by getting to know,” Appiah said.

He added that each of the explores the “anatomy of pain” but contended that there are “moments of hope” in each of them too.

“These books speak very much to our moment, but we believe that they will endure. And we look forward to re-reading all of them as we make our way towards what will inevitably be the very difficult choice of only one of these brilliantly imaginative works as this year’s winner of the Man Booker Prize,” he added.

The shortlist, which features four women and two men, covers a wide range of subjects, from an 11 year-old slave escaping a Barbados sugar plantation, to a D-Day veteran living with post-traumatic stress disorder.

The Man Booker Prize is open to writers of any nationality writing in English and published in the UK and Ireland.

This year’s shortlist features three writers from the UK, two from the US, and one from Canada.

Two novels from independent publishers, are shortlisted, alongside three from Penguin Random House and one from Pan Macmillan imprint Picador.

The 2018 winner will be announced on October 16 in London’s Guildhall.

Here are the shortlisted novels:

1. Milkman by Anna Burns (UK)

2. Washington Black by Esi Edugyan (Canada)

3. Everything Under by Daisy Johnson (UK)

4. The Mars Room by Rachel Kushner (USA)

5. The Overstory by Richard Powers (USA)

6. The Long Take by Robin Robertson (UK)

New Delhi: After the French government and Dassault Aviation contradicted former president Francois Hollande’s claim in choosing Indian industrial partners in the multi-million dollar Rafale jet deal, the Congress on Saturday said the French statement ‘conceals more than it reveals’.

“The French statement conceals more than it reveals. The French government knows verbal interactions between former president Francois Hollande and Indian interlocutors are minuted and would emerge.

“Speculation of French Parliamentary hearing into Rafale and access to administration documents under France’s Freedom of Information Law 1978 rife,” Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari tweeted.

“What French government/corporate entity has just ended up doing is making Rafale procurement a veritable domestic issue in French politics also.”By saying Hollande is being economical with truth they have set the stage for facts/documents to become a torrent.”

Countering the attack, Bharatiya Janata Party leader and Union Minister Ananth Kumar tweeted: “Nailing the lie on its head – misinformation about Rafael deal, Dassault being called out by the French government.

“The statement by the French government issued here late Friday came after Hollande’s reported claim that the Indian government suggested a particular private firm for Rafale offset contract.

In response to the claim, the statement said: “The French government is in no manner involved in the choice of Indian industrial partners who have been, are being or will be selected by French companies.”

Dassault Aviation, the makers of the Rafale jets, in a statement also on Friday night, said: “This offsets contract is delivered in compliance with the Defence Procurement Procedure (DPP) 2016 regulations.

In this framework, and in accordance with the policy of ‘Make in India’, Dassault Aviation has decided to make a partnership with India’s Reliance Group. This is Dassault Aviation’s choice.”

The deal to purchase 36 Rafale fighter jets from France was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015 and signed in 2016.

The UPA government was earlier negotiating a deal to procure 126 Rafale jets, with 18 to come in flyaway condition and 108 to be manufactured by HAL under licence.

The Modi government has repeatedly said it was Dassault that chose its India partner for offsets and that the government had no say in the deal.

Kochi: Indian Navy Saturday said all efforts were being made to rescue its officer, who has been injured after his vessel was hit by a vicious storm mid-way across the south Indian Ocean while taking part in the Golden Globe Race.

Commander Abhilash Tomy of the Navy, representing India in the Golden Globe Race 2018 (GGR) on an indigenously built sailing vessel ‘Thuriya’ suffered a back injury Friday after the yacht was dismasted. “All out efforts are being made to rescue Abhilash Tomy.

Indian Naval stealth Frigate, INS Satpura operating in the Indian Ocean has been dispatched for the rescue mission,” a Defence spokesman said here.

The Indian Navy commander is in the south Indian Ocean, approximately 1,900 nautical miles from Perth in Australia, and the Australian Rescue Coordination centre at Canberra is coordinating the rescue mission in conjunction with many agencies including the Australian Defence Department and the Indian Navy, he said quoting information received from organisers.

Commander Abhilash was dismasted in extremely rough weather and sea condition, with wind speeds of 130 kmph and 10 metre high waves. He was in 3rd position and has sailed over 10,500 nautical miles in the last 84 days, since commencement of the race on July 1.

According to a report issued from the Les Sables d’Olonne, France Friday night, the 70 knot winds and 14 metre high seas have left the yachts of Indian Navy’s Tomy and Ireland’s Gregor McGuckin dismasted, and have twice knocked down the yacht of second-placed Dutchman Mark Slats.

Both McGuckin and Slats report that they are okay, but 39-year-old Tomy, a commander in the Indian Navy making his second solo circumnavigation, has been injured, it had said.

It had also said other entrants were asked to make towards Tomy’s position if possible, and added that the weather was extreme.

The nearest yacht happens to be that of Gregor McGuckin’s Biscay 36 Hanley Energy Endurance, some 90 miles to the southwest of Tomy’s Thuriya, but she too was dismasted in the same storm.

Commander Tomy, who became the first Indian to have circumnavigated the globe in 2013, is the only Indian participating in the Golden Globe Race that involves a gruelling 30,000-mile solo circumnavigation of the globe.

Kottayam: Bishop Franco Mulakkal who was arrested in connection with the sexual abuse complaint filed by a nun will be subjected to a medical examination again ahead of producing him in the court. The bishop was discharged on Saturday morning from Kottayam Medical College where he was admitted following chest pain on Friday night.

Presently, the bishop is in Kottayam police club and will soon be taken to Kottayam general hospital for medical examination.

The 54-year-old clergyman would be produced at the magistrate court in Pala later in the day. The doctors diagnosed that the bishop suffered a high blood pressure which led to chest pain.

Sources said ECG and other cardiac-related tests were performed. His health condition is said to be normal. He had complained of pain in his chest while being taken to Kottayam Police club from the Crime Branch office in Thripunithura in Ernakulam district Friday night.

He was under observation in the cardiology section of the Medical College Hospital for over 6 hours after his blood pressure shot up.

In her complaint to the Kottayam Police in June, the nun had alleged that Bishop Mulakkal raped her at a guest house in Kuravilangad in May 2014 and later sexually exploited her on several occasions.

She said she had to approach the police as the church authorities did not act on her repeated complaints against the clergyman. However, the bishop has denied the charges.

Abu Dhabi: A disciplined all-round effort saw Afghanistan thrashing Bangladesh by 136 runs in their last group match of the Asia Cup here on Thursday.

Chasing 256, Bangladesh were bundled out for 119.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Gulbadin Naib and Rashid Khan picked up two wickets each to hand Afghanistan a comfortable victory.

Chasing a decent target, Bangladesh never looked in the contention as they lost their wickets at regular intervals.

Shakib Al Hasan (32), Mahmudullah (27) and Mosaddek Hossain (26 not out) mainly contributed to the Bangladeshi score. No other batsman clicked and went back to the pavilion one after another, posting single digit individual scores.

Mahmudullah and Mosaddek Hossain scored towards the end but the lack of support denied the run chase.

Earlier, Afghanistan rode on some brilliant batting by Rashid Khan (57 not out), Gulbadin Naib (42 not out) and Hashmatullah Shahidi (58) to post a decent score.

Besides the trio, opener Mohammad Shahzad (37) also played handsomely.

For Bangladesh, Shakib Al Hasan took four wickets while Abu Hider Rony scalped two wickets.

Brief scores: Afghanistan 255/7, (Hashmatullah Shahidi 58, Rashid Khan 57 not out; Shakib Al Hasan 4/42) against Bangladesh 119/10 (Shakib Al Hasan 32; Rashid Khan 2/13)

Hanoi: In the face of global condemnation, Myanmar’s leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi on Thursday said that the handling of Rohingya Muslims, 700,000 of whom have fled to Bangladesh amid a brutal military campaign, could have been better, but still defended security forces from charges of civilian atrocities.

Myanmar’s army is accused of mass rape, killings and setting fire to thousands of homes in the aftermath of an August 2017 attack by Rohingya militants on security outposts.

A report issued two weeks ago by a specially appointed UN human rights team recommended prosecuting senior Myanmar commanders for genocide and other crimes.

“There are of course ways in which with hindsight I think the situation could have been handled better,” Suu Kyi said, responding to questions during a one-on-one discussion at the World Economic Forum’s regional meeting in Hanoi.

She still defended Myanmar security forces, saying that all groups in western Rakhine state had to be protected.

“We have to be fair to all sides,” Suu Kyi said. “The rule of law must apply to everyone. We cannot choose and pick.” Suu Kyi said the situation was complicated by the myriad ethnic minorities in the area, some of which are at risk of disappearing entirely and which include not just the Muslims and Rakhine Buddhists.

Although the violence in Rakhine state has eased, Myanmar has to deal with its aftermath, especially the repatriation of the Muslim Rohingya who fled and the underlying causes of tension that makes them targets of discrimination and repression in overwhelmingly Buddhist Myanmar.

Suu Kyi said that Myanmar is prepared to take those who fled back, but their return has been complicated by the fact that two governments are involved.

Suu Kyi also rejected criticism over the show-trial conviction last week of two Reuters news agency reporters who helped expose extrajudicial killings of 10 Rohingya men and boys.

The reporters were both sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment on charges of possessing state secrets.

US Vice President Mike Pence is among those who have condemned the verdicts and called for the journalists’ release.

“The case has been held in open court,” Suu Kyi said.

“If anyone feels there has been a miscarriage of justice I would like them to point it out.” “They were not jailed because they were journalists. They were jailed because … the court has decided they have broken the Official Secrets Act,” she said.

Suu Kyi noted that the two can appeal their sentences.

The lawyers for the journalists have said they will do whatever they can to get their clients freed.

The two men testified that they had been framed by the police. The case has drawn worldwide attention as an example of how democratic reforms in long-isolated Myanmar have stalled under Suu Kyi’s civilian government, which took power in 2016.

Phil Robertson, deputy Asia director for Human Rights Watch, said that Suu Kyi was mistaken in saying the case was handled in accordance with the “rule of law.” “She fails to understand that real ‘rule of law’ means respect for evidence presented in court, actions brought based on clearly defined and proportionate laws, and independence of the judiciary from influence by the government or security forces,” he said in a statement.

“On all these counts, the trial of the Reuters journalists failed the test.”(AP) RUP RUPas separate item or to be tagged to the other one.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court awarded Rs 50 lakh compensation to ISRO scientist S Nambi Narayanan for being subjected to harassment in ISRO espionage case.

The apex court said that Nambi Narayanan was unnecessarily arrested, harassed and subjected to mental cruelty in ISRO spy case. It also set up a three-member panel headed by former judge D K Jain to probe framing up of Narayanan in spy case.

The Supreme Court was giving its verdict on a petition filed by Nambi Narayanan seeking action against the officials who trapped him in the case.

The court also has ordered that the compensation amount should be levied from the accused officers.

Nambi Narayanan had demanded that action should be taken against former DGP Sibi Mathews, former SPs K K Joshua and S Vijayan, who investigated into the espionage case that destroyed his future.

Meanwhile the state government had made it clear that it will accept the Supreme Court verdict.
