Chennai: Actor-turned-politician Rajinikanth on Sunday extended support to the central government’s proposal to conduct simultaneous elections across the country even as major political parties in Tamil Nadu are opposed to it.

Speaking to reporters here, Rajinikanth said ‘One India, One Election’ is a good idea as it would save time and money of political parties. He also said a decision on contesting in the general elections will be taken later.

Rajinikanth had earlier said his party would contest in the next assembly elections.

Asked about the proposed Chennai-Salem eight lane expressway, Rajinikanth said such projects would bring in industrial investments.

However, he said, the government should see that only minimum farm land is acquired for the project and the land owners are compensated to the extent that they feel happy.

The actor when asked about Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah’s statement that there is a lot of corruption in Tamil Nadu, Rajinikanth ducked the question and said: “It is Shah’s views and the media should ask him.”

According to Rajinikanth, the state government could bring in bigger projects. He also gave a good performance certificate to Tamil Nadu school education minister K A Sengottaiyan.

He said compared to other states in the country, the education system in Tamil Nadu is far better.

Prime minister Narendra Modi has been pitching for simultaneous polls to Parliament and state assemblies for long, saying that it would save a lot of time and money.

The Law Commission is also preparing a report on the proposal. While the ruling the BJP and its allies have supported the move, opposition parties have objected to the proposal which they term ‘impractical’.

New Delhi: Joining the battle against plastic waste, Indian Railways is installing plastic bottle crushing machines at 2,000 stations across the country.

“At a time when plastics in general, and plastic bottles in particular, are being widely recognised as being extremely harmful for the environment, we are undertaking concrete steps to raise awareness to battle the plastic menace,” a senior Railways official involved in the cleanliness drive at stations told IANS.

There is a huge consumption of plastic bottles for cold drinks and water every day at stations across the country.

According a report in 2009 by the Comptroller and Auditor General, approximately 6,289 tonnes of plastic waste is discarded onto India’s railway tracks.

The installation of crushers is a step is to prevent travellers from throwing used plastic bottles on the tracks or in the station premises.

The crusher machines would be installed at platforms and at exit points so that passengers who want to discard their plastic bottles can deposit them in the flaking machine. Depending on the volume of plastic bottles deposited the machine automatically starts and stops. The inserted bottles disintegrate into fine pieces of plastic which is then released from a different outlet.

The plastic pieces will be given to the plastic manufacturers, thus saving the landfills from additional plastic pollutants.

All 16 zones and 70 divisons have been instructed to install the plastic bottle crushing machines at 2,000 stations in the first phase, said the official.

Currently empty plastic bottles are disposed off manually.

There is a need to curb garbage thrown on tracks either by rail commuters or by those staying in illegal slums along the tracks.

The railways has given RITES the responsibility of providing project management consultancy for selecting the agencies for installing and maintaining the crushers.

While smaller stations will be covered under corporate social responsibility spends, the rest of will be done through competetive bidding. Successful bidders will have a eight-year contract to ensure viability and upgrade technology from time to time.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday asked the Centre whether petrol and diesel prices can be brought on par for four-wheelers and private cars in order to control pollution.

A bench of Justice Madan B Lokur and Justice Deepak Gupta suggested that the government could consider fixing prices of diesel and petrol on par at petrol stations for four-wheelers, other than goods vehicles, and asked the Centre to inform it about the decision.

The court’s direction came after the Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA) told it that the real concern was pollution from diesel vehicles and people go for diesel vehicles since they have high-power fuel efficiency.

The court has fixed July 23 the next date for hearing the petition which has raised the issue of air pollution in Delhi-NCR.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today pitched for people’s participation in preserving India’s archaeological legacy and questioned the rules which prohibit them from clicking photographs at certain monuments.

He said training young people as tourist guides will help generate employment and also enhance the interest of people in archaeological sites, thereby boosting tourism.

Addressing a gathering at the inauguration of a new building at the Archaeological Survey of India’s headquarters in New Delhi, Modi said people’s participation is a must to preserve and protect the archaeological legacy of the country.

“The legacy can’t be protected if people are not proud of it… The corporate sector can also be roped in where people can contribute some hours as volunteers,” he said.

Modi suggested that in 100 cities which have historical sites, school syllabus can include information on local archaeological places so that students grow up learning about them.

He also wondered why the ASI was prohibiting people from clicking photographs at certain monuments.

The prime minister said when technology allows satellites to take pictures from far away, restricting people from clicking photographs is not correct.

Kollam: Job Mathew, the vicar of a local church, who was accused with three other clergymen of sexually abusing a woman, was today arrested soon after he surrendered to the police, officials said.

The arrest was made after the priest, belonging to the Malankara Orthodox Syrian church, was questioned by crime branch officials, they said.

“The priest has been arrested and we are trying to track down two other absconding priests,” a senior police official said.

Mathew, the second accused in the case, was not wearing his robe and was seen hiding his face inside a police vehicle while being taken for medical examination.

The clergyman surrendered a day after the Kerala High Court dismissed the anticipatory bail pleas of three priests, including him, observing they acted as “predators” and took “undue advantage” of the victim woman.

The priests– Abraham Varghese alias Sony, Job Mathew and Jaise K George– had approached the court soon after the crime branch slapped rape charges against four clergymen named by the alleged victim as her tormentors.

The FIR was registered against the priests by the crime branch after recording the woman’s statement.

The woman’s husband had last month accused five priests of using his wife’s secret confession to “blackmail and sexually abuse” her.

The name of the fifth cleric was not included for want of substantial evidence.

The incident came to light after an audio clip of the purported conversation of the husband of the alleged victim with a church official about the alleged sexual abuse of his wife by the priests was widely circulated on social media.

New Delhi: A petition, filed in the Delhi High Court on Wednesday, seeks the removal of certain content from “Sacred Games,” a web series by over-the-top media services provider Netflix, on the grounds of insulting former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

It will come up for hearing on Thursday.

It was mentioned before a bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C. Hari Shankar but the bench recused from hearing the matter and listed it for another bench.

On Tuesday, a Congress activist in West Bengal filed a police complaint against actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui, over-the-top media services provider Netflix, and the makers of “Sacred Games” for “insulting and abusing” Rajiv Gandhi.

The complainant said that the show had a scene in which Siddiqui, playing the protagonist, is seen and heard “abusing Rajiv Gandhi, calling him ‘fattu’, which was shown as pu*** in the subtitles”.

The series is based on author Vikram Chandra’s novel of the same name. It has been directed by Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane.

The opening scene hits out at the Congress as there are episodes on Emergency imposed by the Indira Gandhi government, as well as Bofors scandal and Shah Bano cases that created a storm during Rajiv Gandhi’s tenure as Prime Minister.

Washington: US President Donald Trump’s administration will implement a new asylum policy at the border that will result in potentially thousands of asylum seekers being turned away before they can plead their case in court.

The guidance issued on Wednesday also applies to refugee applicants — immigrants seeking similar protections in the US who are still abroad, CNN reported.

Under the new guidance given to the officers who interview asylum seekers at the US’ borders and evaluate refugee applications, claims based on fear of gang and domestic violence will be immediately rejected.

In addition, the guidance tells officers they should consider whether an immigrant crossed the border illegally and weigh that against their claim, potentially rejecting even legitimate fears of persecution if the immigrant crossed illegally.

It says officers “may find an applicant’s illegal entry, including any intentional evasion of US authorities, and including any conviction for illegal entry where the alien does not demonstrate good cause for the illegal entry, to weigh against a favourable exercise of discretion” for asylum.

The guidance does note some illegal crossings may be warranted, including to “escape imminent harm”, but adds that officers “should consider whether the applicant demonstrated ulterior motives for the illegal entry that are inconsistent with a valid asylum claim that the applicant wished to present”.

The changes being implemented by the Department of Homeland Security come on the heels of Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ decision last month that gang and domestic violence victims no longer qualify for asylum, reports CNN.

Asylum protects migrants already in the US who fear persecution in their home country.

Sessions last month overturned an immigration appellate court’s decision to the contrary, reversing course after years of allowing such victims to stay. His decision is now binding for all the immigration judges in the country.

Most immigrants at the borderare Central Americans, coming from countries that are hotbeds of gang violence.

Last month, more than 40,000 immigrants either tried to cross the border illegally or get through a legal crossing without paperwork, many of whom may have been seeking asylum.
