Palanpur (Guj): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday alleged Pakistan was interfering in Gujarat Assembly polls, and sought an explanation from the Congress over its top partymen who are said to have recently met leaders from the neighbouring country.

Addressing a poll rally here, the prime minister also raised questions over the alleged appeal by former director general of the Pakistan Army, Sardar Arshad Rafiq, that senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel be made chief minister of Gujarat.

Modi said (former Congress minister) Mani Shankar Aiyar had called him “neech” (vile) a day after the alleged meeting of Pakistani leaders with top Congressmen.

“There were media reports yesterday about a meeting at Mani Shankar Aiyar’s house. It was attended by Pakistan’s high commissioner, Pakistan’s former foreign minister, India’s former vice president and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh,” Modi said.

The meeting at Aiyar’s house carried on for almost three hours, Modi said.

“The next day, Mani Shankar Aiyar said Modi was ‘neech’. This is a serious matter,” he said.

Modi added that Rafiq had backed Ahmed Patel as the next chief minister of Gujarat.

“(On one side) Pakistan Army’s former DG is interfering in Gujarat’s election, on the other side, Pakistan’s people are holding a meeting at Mani Shankar Aiyar’s house,” he said.

“And, after that meeting, people of Gujarat, backward communities, poor people and Modi were insulted. Don’t you think such events raise doubts,” Modi asked.

He said the Congress should inform the people of the country what exactly it was up to. Modi was speaking at the rally for the ongoing state Assembly polls.

The second phase of polling in north and central Gujarat, including the Banaskantha district, will be held on December 14.

Greater Noida: The sensational double murder of a woman and her 11-year-old daughter has been solved with her son, 16, confessing to have killed them with a pizza cutter because he was scolded and beaten up at home over a minor issue, police said on Saturday.

The juvenile, who was the prime suspect in the December 4 double murder, was detained on Friday from Mughalsarai in Uttar Pradesh from where he had made a call to his father, Senior Superintendent of Noida Police Luv Kumar told the media.

The 42-year-old mother and her daughter were found murdered in the 1446, A Block flat of 11th Avenue of Gaur City in Greater Noida West on Tuesday night. Their blood-soaked bodies were found in the bedroom of their house. The father was travelling out of the city in connection with his business when the crime took place.

There is a possibility that nobody else was involved in the crime, the police said.

Recounting the version as confessed by the boy, Kumar said he attacked his mother and sister with a bat, then used a pair of small scissors and then a pizza cutter to kill them.

He told police that he left the house with some money in a bag soon after the crime and took a cab to New Delhi Railway Station from where he travelled to Ludhiana, Chandigarh, Shimla, and Chandigarh again, to Ranchi and then to Mughalsarai from where he was detained.

Kumar said the boy spent money as much as he could understand and probably missed the bag containing the cash in one of the trains from which he had got down in a hurry.

He perhaps travelled without tickets.

The police officer said the case showed how it was difficult to understand the psychology of a child who believed he was being discriminated vis-a-vis his sister.

Probably he was also weak in studies and not much interested, Kumar said.

The chief secretary, in his letter, stated that reports had reached the state government from fishermen of Thiruvananthapuram that floating bodies of fishermen were spotted in the high seas.

The fishermen have also appealed to step up operations to retrieve the bodies and search for survivors and also take them on board the rescue ships and interceptor boats.

The chief secretary also asked the Navy and Coast Guard to mobilise sufficient ships at Vizhinjam for taking the fishermento the deep seas in their rescue and search operations.

Besides, the health department has been instructed to mobilise adequate storage and treatment facilities for the retrieved bodies at Vizhinjam and along the important coastal centres.

Speaking to reporters in Delhi, Vijayan said Naval and coast guard ships are continuing the search and rescue operations.

There are reports of bodies floating in the waters but the defence ships are unable to trace them.

Vijayan said he would also be taking up this matter with Defence Minister during talks.

So far, 37 persons have lost their lives in the cyclone which left several others missing.

Meanwhile, Defence sources said Coast Guard has been searching around the northern atolls of Maldives.

Pope Francis has called for status quo of Jerusalem to be respected and for “wisdom and prudence” to prevail to avoid further conflict.  Francis made the appeal during his weekly Wednesday audience, ahead of the expected U.S. announcement by President Donald Trump recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Francis said he had “deep worry” about recent developments, and declared Jerusalem a unique and sacred place for Christians, Jews and Muslims that has a “special vocation for peace.”

“I cannot keep quiet about my deep worry about the situation that has been created in the last few days,” he said.

He says: “I pray to the Lord that its identity is preserved and strengthened for the benefit of the Holy Land, the Middle East and the whole world and that wisdom and prudence prevail to prevent new elements of tension from being added to a global context already convulsed by so many cruel conflicts.”

Regrets Trump’s ‘unilateral’ Jerusalem decision: France

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Wednesday he did not support U.S. President Donald Trump’s “unilateral” decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and called for calm across the region, reported Reuters.

“This decision is a regrettable decision that France does not approve of and goes against international law and all the resolutions of the U.N. Security Council,” Macron told reporters at a news conference in Algiers.

Macron, thought to be one of the few world leaders with some leverage on Trump,   is said to have spoken to the president earlier this week,  when reports were afloat about the US policy change,  to try to convince him to change his mind.

France and Europe are attached to a two-state solution – Israel and Palestine  with Jerusalem the capital of both states,” he said, adding that Paris was ready to work with partners to find a solution.

‘Disagrees’ with ‘unhelpful’ US decision: UK

Prime Minister Theresa May on Wednesday said the British government disagreed with US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as the Israeli capital, saying it was “unhelpful” for peace efforts.

“We disagree with the US decision to move its embassy to Jerusalem and recognise Jerusalem as the Israeli capital,” she said in a statement. “We believe it is unhelpful in terms of prospects for peace in the region”.

US move puts region in ring of fire: Turkey

Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan has criticised US President Donald Trump’s decision and said would throw the region into “a ring of fire”, Al-Jazeera reported.

“Taking such a step throws particularly this region into a ring of fire. What would you like to do [with this step], Mr Trump? What kind of stance is it?” Erdogan said on Thursday, at Esenboga Airport in the capital Ankara, before leaving for a visit to Greece.

The Turkish president, who had earlier warned that the status of Jerusalem was a red line for Muslims, said that the US decision was against a 1980 United Nations resolution regarding the status of the city.

He added that political leaders should work to bring peace, not stir things up.

Calling Jerusalem “also a sanctuary for Christians”, Erdogan added that he would speak to Pope Francis about Trump’s decision this evening or on Friday.

Turkey will host an extraordinary meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC) on December 13 to discuss the US move.

No support to Trump’s decision on Jerusalem: Germanyl

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Wednesday that Germany does not support US President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital city of Israel.

“The Federal Government does not support this attitude because the status of Jerusalem is to be negotiated within the framework of a two-state solution,” Xinhua news agency quoted spokesperson Steffen Seibert as saying on behalf of Merkel.

Earlier on Wednesday, Trump announced that he formally recognised Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, while ordering to immediately begin the process of relocating the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.\

During his presidential campaign, Trump pledged to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

European Union: ‘Serious concern’

The European Union’s chief diplomat Federica Mogherini voiced “serious concern” at Trump’s new stance on Jerusalem.

“The aspirations of both parties must be fulfilled and a way must be found through negotiations to resolve the status of Jerusalem as the future capital of both states,” Mogherini said, referring to Israelis and Palestinians.

US Jerusalem move could cause ‘escalation’ of tensions: China

China has warned that US President Donald Trump’s plan to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital could fuel tensions in the region. “We are concerned about the possible escalation of tensions,” foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told a regular news briefing on Wednesday.

“All relevant parties should bear regional peace and tranquility in mind, be cautious in words and deeds, avoid impacting the foundation for the settlement of the issue of Palestine, and avoid causing new confrontation in the region.”

Iran threatens ‘New intifada’ –

Iran condemned the US move, saying it threatened a “new intifada”, or uprising, against Israel.

“The provocative and unwise decision by the US… will provoke Muslims and inflame a new intifada and an escalation of radical, angry and violent behaviour,” the foreign ministry said on its website.

Indonesia summons US ambassador

Indonesian president Joko Widodo, who leads the world’s biggest Muslim-majority country, said he “condemned” Trump’s decision on Jerusalem, and ordered the US ambassador in Jakarta to be summoned over the move.

“Indonesia strongly condemns the United States’ one-sided recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and asks the US to reconsider this decision,” Widodo said in televised remarks.

Beijing: The Chinese military alleged on Thursday that an Indian drone “intruded” into China’s airspace and has “crashed”.

“The Indian UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) intruded into China’s airspace and crashed recently, and Chinese border troops have conducted identification and verification over the vehicle,” Xinhua news agency quoted Zhang Shuili, deputy head of the combat bureau of the Western Theater Command’s joint staff department, as saying.

The newly-created Western Theater Command is the largest of the five military divisions in China. Tibet which shares a border with India comes under it.

“India’s move has infringed upon China’s territorial sovereignty and we are strongly dissatisfied with and opposed to this.

“We will fulfil our mission and responsibility and defend China’s national sovereignty and security resolutely,” he added.

India is yet to react to the Chinese claim which comes ahead of its Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s visit to New Delhi on December 11.

Wang will attend the foreign ministerial meet of Russia, India, and China.

Indian and China were locked into a 73-day military stand-off at Doklam in the Sikkim section, which was resolved on August 28.

The stand-off put a new strain between India-China ties.

Thiruvananthapuram: Battered by cyclone Ockhi, Kerala will forgo the inaugural ceremony of its mega film festival which opens here Friday, organisers said.

The 22nd edition of the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) will open with the French-Lebanese film, “The Insult”, which explores the lives of refugees in Arab countries.

The festival will begin on a quiet note without the opening ceremony as the southern state is yet to recover from the cyclone which hit the Kerala coast last week, claiming 36 lives and causing widespread damage.

Directed by Lebanese filmmaker Ziad Doueiri, the opening film bagged the Volpi Cup at the Venice International Film Festival and would be screened tomorrow evening, marking the start of the festival, organising body Kerala Film Academy said.

Bengali actress Madhabi Mukherjee, the star of Satyajit Ray’s 1964 film “Charulata”, and South Indian actor Prakash Raj are expected to attend the first screening.

The Kerala government had yesterday said the controversial Malayalam movie “S Durga” would be screened at the festival if it got a clearance from the Kerala high court.

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had cancelled the certification of the film on November 28. The films producer and director have challenged the suspension of the certificate in the Kerala High Court.

According to the Academy, 190 films from 65 countries would be screened at the one week-long gala.

The competition section includes 14 films, of which two are in Malayalam.

Films will be shown in 20 different categories such as Indian Cinema Today, Malayalam Films Today, Contemporary Masters in Focus, Retrospective and Identity and Space.

This year, films from Brazil will be the Country Focus. Six films curated by film scholar Stefan Solomon will be exhibited in this section, Academy sources said.

The festival would screen the films of 35 women directors under various categories and these would focus on the subject of Being Woman.

Four of the 14 films in the International Competition section have been made by women.

Rima Das is the only woman director in the Indian Cinema Now section.

In the Uprooted: Films on identity and space category, Geethu Mohandas?s film “Liars Dice” will be screened. Bengali award-winning filmmaker Aparna Sen, who will deliver the Aravindan Memorial lecture, will also screen her latest feature film “Sonata”, which is about three unmarried women living in a metropolis.

Marco Mueller, who was festival director at various international film festivals, is the jury chairman of IFFK this year.

Filmmakers T V Chandran, Colombian actor Marlon Moreno, French editor Mary Stephen and African cinema scholar and film critic Aboubakar Sanogo are also on the jury.

The festival will pay homage to cinema personalities K R Mohanan, I V Sasi, Kundan Shah and Om Puri, who died this year, and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

A total of 8,848 seats have been arranged in various theatres in the town for the festival, which would conclude on December 15, Academy sources added.

New Delhi: The National Green Tribunal on Thursday held Sri Sri Ravi Shankar’s Art of Living responsible for damaging the ecology of the Yamuna floodplains during the three-day cultural extravaganza held last year and asked the organisation to pay for the restoration works.

“We hold respondent no. 3 (Art of Living) responsible for the damage to the Yamuna floodplains,” green tribunal head Justice Swatanter Kumar said in his order.

The verdict comes after a report by an environmental experts panel accused the organisation of causing extensive damage to the Yamuna floodplains in Delhi during the World Culture Festival in 2016.

The NGT has already find the Art of Living Rs 5 crore for the damage and said the amount would be used to restore the fragile floodplains.

“In case more funds are required, Art of Living will have to pay,” the NGT chief said. However, if restoration costs less, the remaining amount of the already deposited Rs 5 crore will be refunded.

The green court also asked the capital’s lead planning body, the Delhi Development Authority, to do a fresh assessment of how much money would be required to restore the damaged floodplains.

Environmentalists had vocally objected to organising the World Culture Festival on the ecologically fragile Yamuna banks — which included a 7-acre stage for 35,000 musicians and dancers, newly built dirt tracks and 650 portable toilets across 1,000 acres.

The Art of Living has denied it caused any damage to the banks, alleging that it has been a victim of a “conspiracy”.

“We have never caused any damage to the environment but have in fact worked for preserving and reviving it through various environment-related projects over the years,” the organisation said.
