Thiruvananthapuram: With the Indian Meteorological Department predicting extremely heavy rains in the coming days for Kerala, a red alert has been issued in the state’s five districts, including Idukki and Malappuram, from July 18, Thursday.
The red alert, denoting likelihood of very heavy to extremely heavy rain, has been issued in Idukki, Malappuram, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Ernakulam districts between July 18-20.
The second spell of the South West Monsoon started from Wednesday. At the same time, it is reported that a low pressure area will be formed in the Bay of Bengal within 48 hours. In view of this, the Indian Meteorological department has predicted that the state will receive extremely heavy rainfall above 20 cm.
It is for the first time in this monsoon, a red alert has been issued in the state. Other districts were also alerted on heavy rain. Orange and yellow alert have been issued in these districts.
The Kerala Disaster Management Authority directed the government and public to stay vigilant as there are chances for landslide and flood. Control rooms will be opened in every taluk.
Places prone to flood and places submerged under water during the last floods are also directed to remain vigilant.
Fishermen restricted from venturing into sea
“Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea as strong winds from north westerly direction and speed reaching 40-50 kmph is likely along and off the Kerala and Lakshadweep coasts,” reads IMD alert.
Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) alerted that there is possibility for high tides up to 3.5 metres.
