Police commissioners to have magisterial powers: CM Pinarayi

Thiruvananthapuram: Police commissioners of Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram will soon have magisterial powers, said Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in the Assembly on Tuesday.

The decision will make them enjoy the powers alongside district collectors.

Meanwhile the CPI, the second largest constituent in the LDF coalition, has made it clear that the party would oppose the state government’s plan to arm police commissioners of Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram with magisterial powers.

The government, which upgraded Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram city police commissionerates to metropolitan status and appointed IG-rank officers as commissioners, is yet to issue an order providing magisterial powers to them.
