Wayanad: It was a reunion after a gap of almost 49 years when Congress President Rahul Gandhi hugged Rajamma, who was his delivery nurse at a hospital in Delhi way back in 1970.
Rajamma Vavathil, was on duty at Delhi’s Holy Family Hospital on June 19, 1970 when he was born.
The 72-year-old Rajamma told Gandhi it was neither Rajiv Gandhi nor Sonia Gandhi, but she was the first one to cuddle him. Hearing this Gandhi hugged her again.
An excited Vavathil later said she was really happy to meet Gandhi after all these years.
“I am really happy and excited. I was the first among the few who took Rahul as a newborn in their hands. All those memories gushed though my mind when I met him again,” she told reporters.
“I felt, I should give him some gift. That is why I gave him sweets and chips made by myself,” the retired nurse said.
“I was lucky as I was the first among the few who took the newborn in their hands. He was so cute. I was witness to his birth. I was thrilled…we all were thrilled to see the grandson of (then) prime minister Indira Gandhi,” she had said.
Rajamma met Gandhi earlier on Sunday at the place where the Congress President had put up for the night in Wayanad. The moment was captured and posted on facebook by Leader of Opposition Ramesh Chennithala.
Chennithala is accompanying Gandhi in his constituency on the roadshows which entered the third day on Sunday.
Rajamma after her retirement, is now settled in Sulthan Bethery in Gandhi’s constituency Wayanad.
Rajamma had come forth to vouch for the fact that she was amongst the ones who delivered the baby in New Delhi when questions on Gandhi’s citizenship surfaced during the Lok Sabha elections. She had said that Rajiv Gandhi and Sanjay Gandhi had waited outside the labour room when Sonia Gandhi was taken into the labour room.
Rajamma had expressed her desire to various Congress leaders that she would like to meet him during his next visit. The wish became a reality on Sunday.
Rahul Gandhi had won the Lok Sabha Elections from Wayanad with a whopping majority of 4.3 lakh.
