Rapist Fr Robin convicted in Kottiyoor case, other six accused acquitted

Thalassery: Prime accused in the Kottiyoor rape case Fr Robin Vadakkumcherry has been held guilty by a court here on Friday. He was accused of sexually exploiting and impregnating a 16-year-old girl in Kottiyoor in Kerala’s Kannur district. Meanwhile the other six accused have been acquitted.

The verdict was pronounced by Thalassery POCSO Court Judge P N Vinod.

The quantum of punishment will be pronounced shortly.

Vadakkumcherry (51) was the Kottiyoor St. Sebastian’s Church vicar and local manager of Kottiyoor IJMHSS from Nadavayal in Wayanad. He has been charged with rape as per POCSO Act.

The Supreme Court had relieved three persons from the trial of the case. Seven accused, including the prime accused in the case, faced trial. The court acquitted accused number 2, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10.

The notorious rape case from Kottiyoor came to light after the victim delivered a baby boy in December 2016 at Christuraja hospital in Kuthuparamba in Kannur.

After the Childline India officials intimated the police, a case was registered on February 27, 2017, by the Peravoor police.
