Kozhikode: After the disastrous Nipah outbreak, the Kozhikode city is hit by Shigella virus which claimed the life of a two year old child.

The deceased identified as Siyaan is the son of Harshad, resident of Thekku in Adivaram.

Siyaan is one of Harshad’s twin children. The other is under treatment at Kozhikode Medical College hospital.

Heavy rain and entry of polluted water into body causes Shigella diarrhoea. Getting fever along with it will worsen the disease.

Shigella infection (shigellosis) is an intestinal disease caused by a family of bacteria known as shigella. Blood and pus along with the excreta can cause the disease deadly.

In addition to diarrhoea abdominal pain and vomiting increases the body temperature.

Children are more affected by the disease. If treatment is delayed thinking it as only diarrhoea will invite huge danger. Medical experts say that the disease will affect the brain and kidney if treatment is not given at the right time.

This is the third death within two months in Kerala.
