Chengannur bypolls: Heavy polling registered in first hour inspite of rain


Chengannur: All arrangements are in place for the Chengannur Assembly byelection on Monday and about 12 per cent of polling was reported in the first one and half hour inspite of rain. The voting that began at 7.00 am would end by 6.00 pm.

Long queues of voters were lined up in front of polling booths since early morning.

It’s a strong triangular contest happening between UDF, LDF and the BJP here. LDF candidate Saji Cheriyan, UDF candidate D Vijayakumar, and NDA candidate P S Sreedharan Pillai have been visiting houses even on Sunday.

Chengannur has a total of 1,99,340 voters, among which 1,06,421 are women and 92,919 are men. There are 181 polling stations including 164 booths and 17 assisting booths. Special arrangements have been made for differently abled, breast feeding, and elderly people, and drinking water facility is also in place.

The polling percentage in Chengannur was 74.36 the last time. All the three fronts are confident of a victory this time.
