Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala State Chalachitra Academy (KSCA), in association with the Manaveeyam Theruvorakootam collective, will screen the Federico Fellini epic, La Strada (The Road), at Manaveeyam veedhi Sunday (today). The viewing, which will have Malayalam subtitles, will begin at 6.30 pm.
The 1954-made Italian classic received the most votes in an ongoing weekly audience poll on the KSCA’s official Facebook page. The competition features auteur works by such legendary directors as Ingmar Bergman, Werner Herzog, Akira Kurosawa, Roman Polanski and Alain Resnais, among others.
For Fellini, La Strada was an intensely personal work that he called “a complete catalogue of my entire mythological world, a dangerous representation of my identity that was undertaken with no precedent whatsoever”. Representing a break with the predominant neorealist climate of the day, it eschewed dogmatic approaches to social reality and dealt near-exclusively with the personal.
The film released to mixed critical response, but international recognition soon came: it walked away with the inaugural Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1956.
The KSCA poll will run weekly until the start of IFFK 2015, Kerala’s premier film festival, on December 4. For more information, visit the IFFK’s official Facebook page – https://www.facebook.com/iffk.ksca
