Fort Kochi boat mishap: Death toll rises to 8, two more body recovered

fort-kochi-boat.jpg.image.784Kochi: Two more bodies were recovered on Thursday from Chellanam harbour taking the death toll in Fort Kochi boat mishap to eight. One among the victim has been identified as Sujeesha, a first year student of Maharajas’ College, Ernakulam.

The ferry boat ‘ M B Bharath’ was going towards Vypeen from Fort Kochi when the accident took place near the international shipping route around 1.34 pm on Wednesday.

Search operations have continued for the second day on Thursday as the police suspect that three more people are still missing.

21649_221287Sujeesha (17) is the daughter of Sindhu, who was also killed in the boat mishap.

The six deceased were identified as Sainaba of Azheekhal in Vypeen, Volga (12) of Amaravati in Fort Kochi, Mattancherry native Sudheer, Kaalamukku native Ayappan, Fort Kochi native Joseph and Chellanam native Sindhu.

Around 30 passengers were rescued and shifted to various hospitals including the Fort Kochi Taluk Hospital and Ernakulam Medical Trust Hospital. Four of the nineteen people undergoing treatment are reportedly in critical condition.

The most alerting factor is that there is still no confirmation on the exact number of people on board the passenger boat. The boat is said to be over three-decades old.
