Thiruvananthapuram: A volleyball coach along with four students was reportedly gone missing at Kovalam Light House beach and the body of one of them was recovered later on Sunday morning. The five hailing from Thiruvananthapuram district had gone to the Light House beach for swimming on Saturday night at about 7pm.
The deceased is Anoop (21) from Varkala whose body was recovered midnight. The other students who were missing are Jithinraj (21) from Vattapara, Nithin (21) from Kazhakuttom, Abhishek (31) hailing from PTP Nagar and Akhil from Statue in the capital.
Though the Life Guard and the local people warned them that swimming in the dark was dangerous, the boys ventured into the sea after the Life Guard left their duty hours.
The Coastal police and Coast Guard security officials are conducting a search to locate them. Search operations were hindered due to the heavy rains in the night and was stopped temporarily but resumed in the morning. Home minister Ramesh Chennithala informed that the state has sought the aid of the Navy in search operations.
‘Of the five, four were from a group of friends, and the other (coach) was from another group. Except one who was in his early 30s, the others were in their 20s,’ an official said.
