Copyright Problem High Court Stays Release of Gulaab Gang

unnamedActivist and Gulabi Gang head Sampat Pal filed a petition to stay the release of the film Gulaab Gang. The Delhi High Court on Wednesday stayed the release of Madhuri Dixit-Juhi Chawla-starrer Gulaab Gang till May 8. The film was scheduled to release across the country on Friday.

Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva stayed the release of the film, starring Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla, saying that if the film is allowed to be released it will cause irreparable damage to her(Sampat Pal) reputation.

The court noted in its order that while loss to the film producer would be monetary, the plaintiff would suffer financially as her copyright over Gulabi Gang had been used without her permission.

Sampat Pal moved the high court seeking a preventive order on the release of Gulaab Gang, saying the filmmakers did not take her permission before making the movie, which shows her in bad light.

She alleged that the lead actress playing her character was shown in bad light in the promos of the film, which will thus affect her reputation.

The court asked Sahara One Media and Entertainment Limited, the producer of the film, and their agents not to release, exhibit, distribute and promote the film till the next date of hearing on May 8.
